What is the Spelling Bee Genius Score?
The spelling bee genius score is the milestone most dedicated players aim for every day. It is defined as reaching 70% of the total possible points in a given puzzle. Because the total points vary every day, the number required for Genius also shifts.
Our genius score calculator takes the guesswork out of the equation. By inputting the daily total (which you can find in our spelling bee hints or on the dated answers page), you can see exactly how many more 4-letter or 5-letter words you need to hit your goal.
How to Use the Rank Calculator
this spelling bee rank calculator is built for quick ranking info. Follow these steps to track your progress:
- 1 Open the official NYT Spelling Bee and check your current score.
- 2 Find the total available points (usually found under the "Hints" menu in the game).
- 3 Enter both numbers into the spelling bee point calculator above.
- 4 Your rank and percentage will be updated instantly.
Understanding Spelling Bee Ranks
The spelling bee ranks system is hierarchical, starting from Beginner and ending at the elusive Queen Bee. Each level requires a specific percentage of the total points.
If you are going for Genius, prioritize high-value shapes — especially the pangram bonus and any seven- or eight-letter words hiding behind suffix families. Our calculator shows how many percentage points separate you from the next tier so you can decide whether to keep hunting or open spoiler-free hints.
Official rank thresholds (percentage of total points)
The NYT Spelling Bee uses fixed percentages of the day's maximum score. Because totals change daily, the raw point value for Genius moves too — that is why mental math fails and a calculator wins.
| Rank | Approx. % of total | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Good Start | 2% | First handful of fours; warm-up territory. |
| Moving Up | 5% | You found the obvious stems — keep cascading suffixes. |
| Good | 8% | Solid four-letter coverage; time to hunt length. |
| Solid | 15% | Mid-puzzle groove; check starting-letter gaps. |
| Nice | 25% | Most casual players stop near here on tough days. |
| Great | 40% | Strong day; pangram or long words usually involved. |
| Amazing | 50% | The wall before Genius — see our stuck-at-Amazing guide. |
| Genius | 70% | Daily badge most solvers chase; about 214 pts today. |
| Queen Bee | 100% | Every valid word — often needs the full list or extreme patience. |
Scoring refresher: four-letter words are 1 point each; longer words score their length; each pangram adds +7 on top of word length. Full rules live on our Spelling Bee rules page and in the Genius rank explainer.
Genius calculator FAQ
Where do I find total puzzle points?
The official game lists totals under Hints, or use our hints page for November 7, 2026 without revealing words. You can also read totals on today's dated answers once you are ready for spoilers.
Why does Genius move every day?
Genius is 70% of a different maximum each morning. A 180-point Genius day and a 240-point Genius day both say "Genius" on the bar — only the underlying math changed.
Calculator vs solver: which comes first?
Use the calculator when you know your score and want a target. Use the solver when you are studying letter sets or verifying a custom hive — ideally after hints, not before your first pass.
