These New Year's spelling words are grouped into four lists, from short words like clock and party for kindergarten to bee-level words like resolution and auld lang syne. They are built for the first week back in January, when students are excited about the new year and teachers want a fresh, short list. Each list notes the tricky pattern, and the end of the post has dictation sentences, games and a 15-minute classroom bee.
New Year's Day 2027 falls on a Friday, so most schools return the following week. That makes a New Year list the natural first list of 2027. After that, move on to our winter spelling words for the rest of January and February.
How to use these lists
Choose by level, not grade. A short week back after the holidays is a good time for a smaller list.
- Day 1: read the list, talk about goals and the calendar.
- Days 2–3: practice with sorts, dictation or a game.
- Last day: a quick test or the classroom bee below.
Eight to ten words is enough for a short first week. Many students are tired after the holidays, so keep the first day light: read the words together, talk about what each one means, and let students choose two words they want to master by Friday.

Where the words come from
A few New Year words have stories that help students remember them:
- January is named after Janus, the Roman god of doors and beginnings, often shown with two faces looking back and forward. You can check the history on Etymonline.
- Auld Lang Syne is a Scots poem by Robert Burns from 1788, sung at midnight in many countries. The phrase means roughly "old long since", or days gone by. See Britannica.
- Annual, anniversary and millennium come from Latin words for year (annus) and thousand (mille).
- Resolution comes from resolve, to decide firmly.
Five New Year spelling games
- Countdown spelling: count down from ten while a student spells a word; finish before "one".
- Resolution jar: students write a goal using two list words and drop it in a jar.
- Confetti sort: cut words onto paper scraps and sort them by pattern.
- Calendar race: spell the twelve months in order as fast as possible, then add the days of the week as a bonus round.
- Word builder: make as many words as possible from celebration. The free Spelling Bee game uses the same skill with a seven-letter honeycomb.
Spelling the months and days
The first week of a new year is the perfect time to fix calendar words. The ones students miss most often:
- February: the first r is often silent in speech. Say "Feb-ru-ary" when practising.
- Wednesday: the d is silent. Say "Wed-nes-day".
- January: remember ua.
- Thursday and Saturday: both have ur, which is easy to write as er.
- September to December: all end in ber.
Ask students to write today's full date in words each morning for a week.
A goal-setting writing activity
Spelling sticks when it is used. Ask each student to write three sentences about a goal for 2027 using at least four list words. For example: "My resolution is to read every night. I promise to keep this habit. By February I hope to see an improvement." Then swap papers and check spelling with a partner.
Keep goals light and personal, such as reading, sport or a hobby. Students do not have to share them aloud.
Meanings of the harder words
- Resolution: a firm decision to do or stop doing something.
- Tradition: a custom passed down over time, such as staying up until midnight.
- Milestone: an important point in progress, originally a stone marking distance on a road.
- Perseverance: keeping going even when something is hard.
- Millennium: a period of a thousand years.
- Centennial: a hundredth anniversary.
- Procrastinate: to put off doing something.
- Chronological: arranged in the order things happened.
Ask students to use each meaning in a sentence about their own year.
A January spelling plan
The New Year list works best as the start of a short sequence:
- Week 1 (back to school): New Year's spelling words, eight to ten words.
- Week 2: months and days of the week, with a focus on February and Wednesday.
- Week 3: winter spelling words, weather and animals.
- Week 4: a review bee using the hardest words from all three weeks.
This gives students a steady routine after the break without repeating the December holiday lists.
Homework ideas for families
Short, playful practice at home works better than long lists. Ideas families can try:
- Spell a list word aloud during the walk or drive to school.
- Write a family resolution using three list words and stick it on the fridge.
- Count down from ten while your child spells a word, then swap roles.
- Find list words in a newspaper, book or calendar.
Five minutes a night is enough, and a parent does not need to be a strong speller to help; just read the word and check the list.
Common New Year spelling mistakes
- calendar written as "calender"
- February written as "Febuary"
- Wednesday written as "Wensday"
- confetti with one t
- millennium with one n
- beginning with one n
Dictation sentences
- We counted down to midnight with our family.
- The fireworks lit up the sky on New Year's Eve.

Run a 15-minute New Year classroom bee
- Pick 20 words from Lists 2 to 4, matched to your class.
- Say the word, use it in a sentence and say it again.
- Students spell aloud or write on mini whiteboards so nobody sits out.
- Use three challenge words for a final round.

Adapting the lists
For younger spellers, cut List 1 to six words and focus on one pattern, such as silent e in hope and date. For strong spellers, add three challenge words and ask them to look up each word's origin. Mixed-level classes can share one theme while each group works from a different list.
More word lists for the season
