For perspective: public archives record over 124,000 accepted answer slots across the game's lifetime, but only about 11,150 unique words. The average word has appeared approximately 11 times. The words atop this table have appeared over 20 times as often!

Why These Words Keep Repeating

It isn't because the editor plays favorites with NOON. It is pure combinatorial mathematics.

A word can only appear in a hive that contains all of its constituent letters, with one of them acting as the center letter. NOON requires only two letters: N and O. Any hive featuring N and O, where either letter is in the center, can validly accept NOON. In contrast, an eight-letter word like MECHANIC demands seven distinct letters, qualifying it for only a handful of hives in the game's entire history.

In our sample of 156 consecutive puzzles, we grouped every accepted answer by how many distinct letters it uses:

Different Letters in Word Words in Sample Average Appearances per Word
2 distinct letters266.2
3 distinct letters4033.2
4 distinct letters1,4942.0
5 distinct letters1,2121.4
6 distinct letters5721.1
7 distinct (pangrams)2341.0

Every additional distinct letter dramatically reduces a word's probability of reappearing. Double and repeated consonants (NN, LL, OO, TT) are the secret engine of repeat answers: they allow a word to easily reach the 4-letter minimum with only two distinct characters.

What Our 2026 Data Shows

While all-time lists show historical trends, individual seasons experience unique letter clusters. Here are the top answers in our 156-puzzle sample:

  • 14 appearances each: ACAI, ACACIA, NAAN, NANA
  • 13 appearances each: IMAM, MAIM, MITT, TINT
  • 12 appearances each: NOON, NATANT, ATTAIN, ANTI, TAINT, TANNIN, TITAN
  • 11 appearances each: LOLL, OLIO, MAMA, MAMMA, MINI, MINIM, MILL, CANNA, CANCAN
  • 10 appearances each: TOOT, ONION

In total, 64% of all answer slots went to words that appeared more than once in just five months. Repeats aren't an anomaly; they are the core fabric of daily gameplay.

Spot the Trigger Letters

Rather than memorizing 100 individual words, train your eyes to spot trigger letter combinations when you first inspect the honeycomb:

If the Hive Has… Try These Repeat Words First
N + ONOON; add T for ONTO and TOON; add I for ONION; add A for ANON
L + OLOLL; add I for OLIO; add T for TOLL, TOOL and LOOT
T + OTOOT; add M for MOOT; add N for TOON
N + ANAAN, NANA; add T for NATANT; add C for CANCAN; add M for MANNA
T + I + LTILT, TILL, LILT
T + I + NTINT; add A for TAINT, TITAN and TANNIN
M + AMAMA, MAMMA; add I for IMAM and MAIM
A + C + IACAI, ACACIA; add T for TACIT, ATTIC and CACTI
N + ENENE; add T for TEEN, TENT and TENET
P + A, B + A, D + O, L + UPAPA, BABA, DODO, LULU, LULL
⚠️ Always check the center letter: If the honeycomb has N and O, but the center letter is T, NOON will fail because it lacks T. But ONTO and TOON will succeed!

The Odd "Bee Words" Worth Knowing

Some frequent answers trip players up because they seem unfamiliar in casual conversation. Here are what these recurring answers mean:

  • NENE: The Hawaiian goose and Hawaii's state bird.
  • OLIO: A miscellaneous collection, mixture, or hodgepodge.
  • LOLL: To lounge lazily or hang loosely (e.g., a dog's tongue lolls).
  • LILT: A cheerful, rising-and-falling rhythm in speech or music.
  • TOON: Informal shorthand for a cartoon character.
  • ACAI: Small purple berry from a South American palm tree.
  • ATTAR: Fragrant essential oil pressed from rose petals.
  • NATANT: Swimming or floating in water.
  • COCCI: Plural of coccus (spherical bacteria).
  • MINIM: A half note in musical notation, or a tiny droplet.
  • ANNAL: A historical record of a single year (singular of annals).
  • RATATAT: A rapid series of sharp knocking sounds.

How to Use the List Strategically

  1. Bank them in the first two minutes: Most recurring words are 4 letters (1 point). Lock them in immediately to advance past Beginner, then shift your attention to longer words.
  2. Don't rely on them for Genius: Finding ten 4-letter words yields only 10 points. Genius thresholds routinely exceed 120–200 points. You must find 6+ letter words and pangrams. Check our Spelling Bee strategy guide for deeper tactics.
  3. Read the hive's DNA: If NOON, ONTO, and TOON all exist, check our daily two-letter hints to see how many NO- and TO- words remain.
  4. Remember lists evolve: The NYT editors regularly trim and update the dictionary. Learn how the Spelling Bee dictionary is chosen.

Common Mistakes with "Common Words"

  • Typing on autopilot: Never type NOON before verifying that N or O is in the center ring.
  • Missing the longer family members: ACAI often brings ACACIA. TINT brings TINCT. NANA brings NANNY when Y is available. Always stretch words to their full length.
  • Memorizing lists with S: The letter S is almost never in the grid. Any guide recommending words like ELSE or LESS is misleading. See why there is no S in Spelling Bee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common word in NYT Spelling Bee?

NOON. It has appeared about 251 times since 2018, followed by LOLL and TOOT.

Does Spelling Bee repeat words?

Yes, constantly! In our 2026 archive sample, 64% of all answers were words that appeared multiple times across just five months.

Why do NOON, LOLL and TOOT show up so often?

They only require two distinct letters, meaning they can appear in dozens of hives that include those letters, provided one is in the center.

Are words like NENE and OLIO real words?

Yes. NENE is Hawaii's state goose and OLIO is a mixture or collection. They recur because their letters easily match common hive combinations.
